Back in the the 50's (that's as far back as I can go) companies used to feel good that they had not sacked anyone during the depression years. There was loyalty to employees and employees had loyalty to the firm often spending their whole working life with the same firm. FIFO would have been unheard of in those days as it would have been deemed socially unacceptable
