Yes & back in the 50s a woman's place was in the kitchen... etc, etc , etc.
FIFO also would have been impractical.
FIFO largely exists because people don't want to live in whoop whoop.
People used to travel for days & weeks at a time & stay away from their families for a year at a time in some cases to 'get ahead'.
Thank gawd at least in the Western world those days are largely gone.
