Geoff Wilson is very reluctant to pay dividends without franking credits.
The last time he was in a predicament of not being able to pay a dividend, which was, from memory, in 2008.
He was able to pay shareholders in the form of an equal asset buy-back. WAM bought back a calculated number of shares at a discount to the current price equal to the dividend he wanted to pay. The law, at the time, prevented companies paying dividends without sufficient retained earnings. Geoff got the law changed so that companies could pay dividends without the retained earnings, provided it was prudent to do so.
2008 was after the global financial crash & Geoff wanted investors, many of whom were reliant on the dividend, to be rewarded as they faced hardship.
