That being the case, when they break down there's more of a need to engage legal representation with much more urgency.
Stay friendly and amicable and keep the communication lines open, and remember the most important one to consider is the child. Another thing, if you do manage to agree to a solution with your ex then I strongly advise to have it ratified by the courts, as if and when people meet new partners things can change very quickly.

Someone got into the ear of my ex after we agreed on money. $5000 turned into her wanting $150,000 plus super. I was only in my 20's and had been out of uni for 2 years so a lot of money.
