Do not underestimate the courts sympathy for the mother. In my personal experience it wont matter if the woman has a job and it wont matter a whole lot if you do and can support your son. What will happen is the court may well make you pay the wife for her and the child and centrelink or some organisation like that will give the mother other benefits as well. This will especially be the case if her family offers support in childminding etc.
In my personal experience see a lawyer sooner rather than wait for some legal action from the mother if you want to keep your son.
