Respect and friendship are pretty fundamental imo, we have that, however my parents lacked these two elements and their home was not an enjoyable place to live! They have never seperated and I think they now enjoy being miserable together in a bizarre kind of way. Like all things in life you have to work at it and be prepared for a bit of compromise along the way.
