"Over the next 20 years, says the 241-page report, India's gross domestic product will grow fivefold and the number of middle class households will quadruple to 91 million. But it is the statistical projections concerning India's need for metals and energy that make startling reading.

McKinsey says India will need to build 7400km of metro and subway railways to serve the 68 cities that will have populations over 1 million. As much as 900 million square metres of new commercial and residential building (that's equivalent to a new Chicago every year) and 2.5 billion square metres of roads will have to be built.

If this scenario eventuates, then Australia is looking at another huge resources boom -- assuming there are enough resources here not tied up for use by China, whose own requirements will test our productive capacity. "
