As to why it has never been used before - this has been covered in several presentations and slides etc by SG and others
I suggest you continue on with the research and discover why.
Also on the scale question ... LG and POSCO both did significant DUE DILIGENCE and we also did several months / weeks of testing late last year and early this year ... potential scalability issues have also been addressed.
