It may be both, because there were certainly animist religions for virtually every tribe on earth. Christianity, on the other hand, was forced from on top down and conversion came by fire and sword. Tribes that didn't accept Christianity would have been locked out of trade deals, so rulers had incentive to accept the new religion.
