I suppose the American Indians could have squashed the first pilgrims. The Incas could have squashed the conquistadors at first. The Aboriginals could have got together and defeated the first fleet. the Maoris almost kept NZ.
But they didn't.
Weak, disorganised civilisations are taken over by the strong.
