Just a quick correction.
There IS a reference to god in the US declaration of independence. This was used to explain the natural rights of people were unalienable, and not granted by the state.
As for the founders - indeed a number were at least deists if not atheists.
Thomas Jefferson didnt buy any of the supernatural stuff in the bible but did think Jesus was a great moral teacher.
