Shame makes people search for redemption. But redemption won't be given by God, Jesus, Buddha or anyone external. First of all, Jesus and Buddha are dead, and God (mind-created God) doesn't exist. Shame can only be resolved by owning it and sharing it. Then it's gone and so is the need for redemption. Only then can spiritual pursuits be considered. In fact "pursuit" is the wrong word. Real spirituality comes to you; you don't go to it. It's not possible to aim at God or pursue it in any way.
Most spiritual dudes I know of have deep personal shame that they are trying to cleanse with spiritual work. And it just makes their problems worse.
