possibly because true believers are happy to gloss over the bits they don't like claiming things like "it was a different time" or "yes, but what about this bit" and, "it's about the message".
Not sure the last time an athiest sentenced someone to death for believing in a god, or the last time some athiest villagers pack raped a girl because her brother was seen with an unendorsed female, so it seems to me that it isn't "us" that need to be saved but rather the irrational people that believe that an invisible, incongruous, contradictory and unknowable diety that somehow controls our destiny.
