The Narrabri gas project is not despised by the locals.
Look at the booth level results in the recent NSW election for Barwon.

Even though the Nationals lost the seat overall, in the booths around Narrabri they got >70% support. In other booths they got much lower support. The Nats were supporting the project, Labor were strongly against and Independents were mildly against.
To me this implies strong local support for Narrabri
