as an Anaesthetist, I can tell you absolutely, there are no kickbacks. No kickbacks from surgeon to GP, no kickbacks from pharmacist or drug company to GP. You are correct, the total cost of a joint replacement maybe in the order of $30-50k, but the surgeon only sees about $5k, the rest is for the implant itself, hospital bed, theatre fees, radiology, pathology etc.
There is great resistance from GP's in prescribing narcotics for pain.
