Washington D.C.—The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will host a virtual meeting of the High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) Consortium on Friday, February 17, at 12 p.m. EST to welcome more than 50 new members. DOE established the HALEU Consortium in December 2022 to help inform DOE activities related to securing a reliable domestic supply of HALEU—a crucial material needed to develop and deploy advanced reactors. HALEU is not currently available from domestic suppliers and this lack of availability could threaten the deployment of advanced reactors if unaddressed. The purpose of the Consortium is to partner with DOE to support the availability of HALEU for civilian domestic demonstration and commercial use. Individual members may provide the Secretary of Energy with demand estimates of HALEU needed for domestic commercial use, purchase HALEU made available to members for commercial use under the program, carry out demonstration projects using HALEU provided under the HALEU Availability Program, and coordinate on a schedule for cost recovery of HALEU for commercial use, if applicable.
