Isn't that the job of the auditor? To work out the legitimacy or otherwise of the documents the company is presenting them with. If they can't verify the documents as legitimate they shouldn't give the accounts the all clear. Isn't that why auditors exist: because the executives of the company might be falsifying the accounts? If that's not their function, why have them at all?
