If we go back and look at the big picture for Gallipoli it was never an anti Moslem campaign. It was a strategic offensive against an ally of Germany. Unfortunately for Turkey they found themselves on the wrong side of history in WW1 due to their alliance with Germany. It had nothing to do with their religion and this shows the disingenuosness of Erdogan's comments. After the war Turkey was in a bad state and needed to curry favour with the west. No doubt Attaturk's fine words were intended to cultivate favour with the allies after the war.
