In 2016 KDR was involved in a"CIVIL" matter not a fraud "CRIMINAL" matter. I know this as fact because I attended the trial in the WA Supreme Court.  There was no conviction of anyone, it was a dispute over an agreement. The matter was brought by MZN against KDR, a tin pot outfit at the time, over an alleged binding agreement concerning Mt Holland lithium find. Incidentally KDR didn't know they had it, they were looking for gold and were alerted by a 3rd party to  the Li. Got rich accidentally. dyor.

One thing you were correct about was others were smarter than KDR management. Hmm, a GPP parallel here, we just need a 3rd party to  accidentally find something, anything.
