    Chevron announces WA gas find
    Energy: 19-October-09 by Edited announcement

Chevron Australia has made a major gas discovery located in the Carnarvon Basin offshore Western Australia, underpinning its $50 billion Gorgon liquefied natural gas project in the state.

    The full statement is below:

Chevron Australia, along with Shell Development (Australia) and ExxonMobil Australia, today announced further drilling success in blocks located in the Carnarvon Basin offshore Western Australia, Australia's premier hydrocarbon basin.

The Achilles-1 exploration well is located in the WA-374-P permit area approximately 160 kilometres northwest of Onslow in the Greater Gorgon Area. The well spudded on 23 July and was drilled to 4,500 metres, encountering approximately 100 metres of net gas pay in five Triassic Mungaroo sands.

Chevron Australia managing director Roy Krzywosinski said the success of Achilles-1 was welcoming given the significant exploration investment Chevron was making in northwest Australia in 2009 and 2010.

"We are investing hundreds of millions of dollars in Australia on exploration drilling, appraisal drilling, and seismic. The success of our drilling program will provide additional natural gas to underpin the Gorgon and Wheatstone Projects," said Krzywosinski.

The exploration well was completed by the ENSCO 7500, a dynamically positioned semisubmersible rig capable of drilling depths up to 10,600 metres with a water depth of 2,500 metres.

"The Ensco 7500 is currently spudding the Satyr-1 exploration well in the WA-374-P permit area and we look forward to similar success with this well," Krzywosinski added.

Chevron Australia is the operator of WA-374-P with 50 per cent interest while Shell Development (Australia) and ExxonMobil Australia each hold 25 per cent.

Chevron is one of the world's leading integrated energy companies and through its Australian subsidiaries, has been present in Australia for more than 50 years. With the ingenuity and commitment of more than 1,400 people, Chevron Australia leads the development of the Gorgon and Wheatstone natural gas projects; manages its equal one-sixth interest in the North West Shelf Venture; and operates Australia's largest onshore oilfield on Barrow Island and the Thevenard Island oilfields.

The company is also a participant in the Browse liquefied natural gas development and is a significant investor in exploration offshore northwest Australia, one of Chevron's four global focus areas for exploration.

In addition, Chevron's Perth-based Global Technology Centre provides technology support and solutions to the company's operations in Australia and around the world. www.ChevronAustralia.com
