Newcrest special dividend on the cards Peter Ker

A special dividend could flow to Newcrest Mining shareholders later this year, as the nation's biggest goldminer considers how best to carve up the spoils of high gold prices.

Newcrest is on track to achieve another annual profit above $1 billion after announcing first half profits of $659 million today.

The company today promised shareholders an interim dividend of 12 cents, which is 2 cents higher than the interim dividend announced in February 2011.


When asked if shareholders could be rewarded with a special dividend when the company reports its full year results in August, Newcrest chief executive Greg Robinson said such a move would be considered, and was ''always on the cards'' in times of plenty.

Newcrest delivered its first ever full year profit above $1 billion in mid 2011, but appears to be tracking well above that rate for the year to June 30, 2012.

The market has been impressed by today's results, lifting shares of Newcrest by 89 cents to $34.33. Shares have risen 13 per cent so far this year to $33.44, more than double the rise in the broader market

Today's bumper result was largely due to consistently high gold prices, which were on average 20 per cent higher than the same period last year.

The gold price soared above $US1900 per ounce for the first time in late 2011, and is still historically high at today's value of $US1732


Its two closely watched expansion projects, the $1.9 billion upgrade of Cadia East in Australia and its $1.3 billion plant upgrade at Lihir in Papua New Guinea, remain on schedule and on budget, the company said.
