Your last sentence above IMO was the most relevant in your post.
IMO you either invest for the long term (ME) or you trade short to medium term (MANY OTHERS)
A lot of the time traders dictate SP activity so LT investors have to learn to put up with trader induced fluctuations.
LT investors will remain as such whilst the fundamentals are still strong or improving as in the case with PEK.
I also believe that the share register contains 40-50 million shares that are owned/traded/recycled by small and mums and dads investors.
The big end of town is yet to arrive IMO.
