I grew up watching my Dad belt my Mum, my Mum ambush my Dad and belt him and subject him to all manner of mental abuse. I watched my Mum subject me and my siblings to physical , emotional and psychological abuse. I watched my Dad do the same to use in later years.
I read books and I understand the cycle and psychology of abuse and my own maladaptive behaviours better than anyone. I can tell you what all that reading did for me. It helped me heal, it helped me change, it helped me become a better human being , it helped me forgive myself for my own failings. It also give me the strength and courage not to repeat the cycle of abuse on my wife or anyone else.
I’m far from perfect and still a work in process but I live a better life than I may otherwise had if I hadn’t of read those books.
