Yes, a complicated business. Media reports I have seen on lithium battery fires in houses have not been from cars, but from ebikes and other devices being charged. I have just this morning disposed of a portable DVD player whose lithium battery had swelled up. Wondering whether to leave the swollen battery inside the house or to put it outside until I get a chance to go to the e-waste centre.

I wonder whether we soon may be setting up charging points for battery devices in the back yard?

And a further thought. The house I am buying is officially in a bushfire zone, ie, it is within 500m of bushland - actually about 200m away and on the other side of a hill. When in a bushfire zone, you must comply with special regulations, such as that insect screens cannot be plastic, but must be metal, and gutters must be covered to prevent accumulation of leaves and other combustibles. I guess it may be possible that there are additional requirements for household batteries.
