    Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has slapped down a call from US President Donald Trump for a ceasefire in north-eastern Syria, as Ankara faces growing condemnation over its military offensive there.

    urkey pressed ahead with its operation on Tuesday (local time) despite the US imposing sanctions on three Turkish ministers and two government departments, and hiking up steel tariffs.Russia is the latest country to weigh in on Turkey's incursion into Syria, making its strongest criticisms since Mr Erdogan launched the operation last week.And it looks like the Turkish leader may have to take some of these critiques in person, with Mr Erdogan set to meet with both Russia's Vladimir Putin and US Vice-President Mike Pence in coming days.Meanwhile in Washington, the backlash against Mr Trump's decision to pull US troops out of Syria continued to grow.
