It was 86 years ago today that Peter Casserly was welcomed home from the Western Front.
Today, he was farewelled at a state funeral in Fremantle.
Mr Casserly died last week aged 107.
He was the last Australian veteran who had survived the battles on the Western Front.
His grandson, Stephen Casserly, said his grandfather symbolised the Anzac spirit.
WA Governor Lieutenant General John Sanderson said Australia owed Mr Casserly a great debt.
About 100 soldiers formed a guard of honour for Mr Casserly as his casket, which was draped in the Australian flag, left St Patrick's basilica.
