I remember visiting South Africa as a child.
There were signs on park benches.
Benches for whites, benches for coloureds and benches for black.
They made exceptions for some non-whites and declared them honorary whites so that they could mix with whites.
They did that sometimes for foreign sports people so they could compete with whites.
Black workers not allowed to live in white areas so they would bus them in daily from compounds out of town.
More recently the whites and coloureds live in compounds protected by security.
