If you can't buy back the shares at a certain point. You lose the position. i.e. you pay back the value of the stocks you borrowed at the price you borrowed it at.
Lending shares to short speculation is one way insto holders hedge themselves. They get a large payout from the shorters if the company goes to zero. The house always wins at the end of the day...
As usual the big losers here are the WEB customers and employees... It's always the little people that suffers in the end.
