There has been a lot of explaination in this forum about it.
As I understand it (and I am far from an expert) --
Basically if you can see the depth ie the individual trades then you will see that there are very small trades going on (like 3 to 200 shares) which are use to push the price up or down triggering off peoples stops. These small trades are usually people who have large holdings and basically buy and sell to themselves so they can pick up other peoples shares at lower prices
