The Book of Revelation makes more sense if the audience it was written for is considered.
The book was written to encourage early Christians while under the persecution of the Roman Empire, Also consider the facts that the Roman Empire eventually embraced Christianity and like all empires in history came to an end.
The attempts to shoehorn the book into a period nearly 2000 years down the track is the cause of much confusion.

Correct, that's about the bulk of the story, the bible has to be viewed in the context it was written in 2000 years ago, and even by whom and for whom has to be considered, it was written by the new fledgling church for it's own, nobody else, which later grew to became the CC

Not for something that would eventuate 2000 years later on trying to put meaning to writings that don't belong to them

Similar to any company, when a new company is formed and writes operational documents, they are theirs, only they have the right authority to them and to be viewed within the operational and working of that company.
