    yes, but it also gives you a couple of other things ------ 1. it 'should' give you the ability to research productively and critically think AND it can (and should) give you a solid beginning in a network.

    On the job training then allows you to practically apply those skills
    yes - but, it also draws you into the culture of whatever it is - the industry or whatever - that can be medicine, different sciences - art, etc etc..

    One good entertaining read is Reg Sprigg's 'Geology is fun' 1989. It tells a lot about the culture of the world of geological science etc.
