Many moons ago Legendry bookmaker Bill Waterhouse would see a big punter coming to make a big bet. Instead of shortening the price, Bill would lengthen the price, and the Big punter who was known to be swayed by the opinions of others would lose faith, thinking the bookie had some inside info, and would bet on another horse instead. The Bookie now knew the horse the Big punter fancied, and would bet heavily at a good price, while collecting the Big Punter's money from the losing horse. The Big punter was known to remark "The chalk got me"
It is easy for the stockmarket bookmakers (ie CFD providers and instos) to push the price up and down by trading a few shares, and cause some punters to lose faith
