It's the first pure digital currency in existence. Unlike digital transaction systems like Mastercard or PayPal before it, custodianship is not a requirement.
In the immediate short term, Bitcoin is having problems scaling because it has become so popular. Solutions like the lightning network allow day to day transactions far cheaper than what Mastercard or PayPal could accomplish.
