Malaysian court ends Raub gold mine campaign

SEPTEMBER 10: Malaysia’s Federal Court has ended a long legal campaign by local residents challenging Peninsular Gold’s Raub gold mine in central Malaysia.

In a unanimous decision, the court dismissed with costs an appeal by villagers of Kampung Bukit Koman in Raub who challenged the 1997 environmental permit for the mine.

Peninsular Gold says the decision exhausts the villagers’ last avenue of appeal in a campaign they began in 2008.

Lawyers for the villagers, who claim to have suffered health problems from cyanide used in the gold mine in the 1990s, told local media they would consider other options.

The mine was reopened by Raub Australian Gold Mining and produced a record 5,321oz gold in the March 2012 quarter.

Separately, Raub has begun defamation action in the High Court of Malaya at Kuala Lumpur against two publications and certain journalists over articles about the company and operations.
