We have a commitment to drill two wells and that remains our plan. For the long term plan, oil companies do not plan at $120. They do it at a much lower level.
What are foreign companies saying about Tanzania’s oil and gas exploration environment?
There is an interesting split on how people perceive different places. A lot of companies are looking at Tanzania only. They look at Kenya and say the taxation regime is high and there’re risks associated with politics. Interestingly, at the same time a few companies rely on Kenya because the infrastructure is moving ahead. So people are looking at stability, level of corruption and the taxation system. Generally, Tanzania’s image is positive.
Tanzania changed the energy and minerals minister recently and at the same time the country has not yet completed the natural gas policy. Is there any risk associated with this change?
What is important is continuity and having an investment plan so that if the minister changes today, the projects progress as planned. It’s appropriate to have a policy which is inclusive so that it gives guidelines to what is expected and what is not expected.
There is this issue of transparency in oil and gas contracts companies enter with the government which some MPs want to be public. Are you ready?
Since we are listed on disallowed, everything is supposed to be open to the public.
A couple of weeks ago, we had a meeting with the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) whereby the agency asked us if there was any objection to this. There wasn’t any objection from any company, but our request was that TPDC should make sure that the public understands what is written in the documents to avoid confusion.
We are working on our Production Sharing Agreement to put it in Kiswahili; it will be made public once it is done in a few weeks to come.
