one can assume that people will always be materialistic, and simply buy for the sake of buying - much of which will end up as new items in a garage sale,a few years down the track.
the truth is that shops are full of stuff that people do not need, but the marketing people, know how to get people to part with their money. How many teddy bears do kids need (maybe 50), how many shoes does a person need - (maybe 50 pairs), how many dresses does a woman need (maybe 50). when watso was a kid, it was one or two good shirts, a pair of good trousers, a pair of jeans and some odds and ends. now the cupboards are full with clothes that never wear out, and enough shoes to last 30 years.
