Market surges late

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rallied late in the session on Wednesday, led by rising shares of financial companies on speculation about capital infusions for bond insurers.
The gains, which sent the Dow up more than 2 percent, put Wall Street on course to snap a 5-day string of losses.

The Dow Jones industrial average (DJI:^DJI - News) was up 243.14 points, or 2.03 percent, at 12,214.33. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (^SPX - News) was up 24.23 points, or 1.85 percent, at 1,334.73. The Nasdaq Composite Index (Nasdaq:^IXIC - News) was up 20.13 points, or 0.88 percent, at 2,312.40.
