Some of those lending stock would be index funds, who don't care less which way the share price goes.
Other lenders would be prime brokers who are lending out their clients' stock, so again, don't care what the share price does.
This is an interesting (and to date expensive) experiment for me. The technicals say sell: the monthly MACD - which is a great indicator - has crossed lower saying time to bail. But I can't understand the sense in selling good gold stocks when gold remains strong and has such a good fundamental story, so I am continuing to hold (just as i held on to tanking resource stocks in 2008 when the MACD was screaming "SELL". bummer.) I fear i will end up wishing i had listened to the techs!
