I don't think cutting down forests and burning wood is a better option for the Portuguese but the headline will make them feel superior until it doesn't. Nobody has overcome base load problems and IMO that is the only way we will see a real shift to renewables. Portugal can no doubt tap into the French nuclear power but the greens want them gone as well.
Greens want electric cars, bikes, heating, etc which expands our need for more power. Renew ables cannot cover this demand 24/7.
We could however, connect a universal grid from north south east west, with a nuclear base and renewables, which will meet global demand 24:7. Its always going to be windy and sunny somewhere in the world. That would of course need a little cooperation between Governments - so that's a none starter for sure. Much easier to make silly demands or tell a few porkies while kicking the can down the road. If you want to see how the populace will operate with interruptions to electricity supply simply shut down the base load for 24hrs. No telephones, no internet, etc. It won't be pretty. But just might get people talking with some common sense.
