A short story from Africa. A senior clergyman I knew, respected minister of the NG Kerk, for those who know what that is, was posted to Windhoek, the capital of Namibia for some years. One time he was driving his Mercedes from SA to Windhoek through the bone dry sandy Namib desert when he came across a shiny new Landcruiser on the side of the road. There were two black african fellows in it. He asked them if they were OK, and they said no. They did not have enough fuel to get back to the last fuel stop 200k back. He asked them why they did not just keep driving to Windhoek it is only 100k-do you have fuel for that? Yes, they did, but a black crow had flown across their path and they would never continue down the road till another one passed to break the bad magic in that direction. They were nearly out of water and would have died of thirst rather than cross the crow's old flight path, unless a second one came.
