I was hoping there was an undertone of sarcasm in your letter, but not. Hence, for once I must strongly disagree with you Dr Looi.
The problem (aside from pesticides, depletion of thin rainforest topsoil meaning rainforest can't grow back etc), is DIVERSITY. In less than a sq km you maybe have more tree/plant species than Europe and North America combined. Plus all the animals that depend on them.
The VAST difference in Europe is low diversity, deep soil, and not to mention, Europe has had a GROWING tree coverage since the turn of the 20th century..
Disappointed.
