Dr M has the opportunity to run the country free of party politics until such time that a coalition majority of some description is formed and this majority can agree on a new champion. The scenario is effectively a dictatorship at first. He can appoint a cabinet at his discretion on the basis of ability as a meritocracy or based on his political agenda. From media reports, it appears that his only sticking point is a not UMNO policy and everything else is negotiable, including the details of a Lynas renewal. Uncertainty reigns for now.
