Malaysia Parliament to Pick New Leader on March 2, Mahathir Says
(Bloomberg) Malaysian lawmakers will meet on March 2 to resolve the country’s political impasse after the king failed to find any candidate with a clear majority, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad told reporters. If parliament still can’t find a prime minister who can command a clear majority, then the country will hold elections, Mahathir said. He had met with the king earlier on Thursday, four days after resigning suddenly due to political bickering in his coalition. “He cannot find anybody with a distinct majority,” Mahathir said of the king. “And because he doesn’t get a distinct majority, he says that the right forum would be the parliament.”
Mahathir said Wednesday he would return to power if enough lawmakers back him. His main opponent is Anwar Ibrahim in the former ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition that Mahathir left, which now commands 41% of seats in parliament.
