On balance as I read it, it’s much better for Lynas than it looked a day or so ago. Most importantly it appears that the main anti-Lynas DAP/Yeo/Fuziah political forces are greatly diminished. Secondly, it’s hard to see any impetus now to attempt to overturn Lynas’s new 3-year ‘permit to simply operate as a major employer of 97% highly qualified Malaysians and with an impeccable safety record.’ And the new Government will now need budgetary support from Lynas’s prime customer and funder - Japan more than ever!

The broader question of whether it’s good for Malaysia is less clear. I suspect the partial return of many of the former corrupt UMNO figures may lead to ongoing problems. I’ll be watching what happens to the Najib trial as a pointer.

But overall, after what Lynas shareholders have been subjected to over the last decade, I’ve lost almost all support for the country I lived in for three years, and where my daughter was born....
