i think the best indicator of "true" or traditional epithermal deposits is in the type of quartz - chalcedonic - that is one of the very consistent criteria of epithermals - grades and associated minerals and hosts all vary around the world but in general the field geo will immediately recognise the chalcedonic quartz and be content to call the deosit epithermal in character.
