Tertiary begins fluorspar test as prices soar

Tertiary Minerals (AIM: TYM) today said it had started test drilling on its Storuman fluorspar deposit in Northern Sweden, where it acquired 100 per cent ownership in January.

An environmental permit has been obtained for drilling and initially twelve diamond drill holes are planned.

The information obtained from the drilling and subsequent metallurgical testwork will form the basis for a technical and economic scoping study to be completed this summer, said Patrick Cheetham, executive chairman of the Macclesfield based mining company.

Tertiary said it was extending its ground holding with applications for three further exploration licences, two to cover possible extensions to the known deposit and one elsewhere in the region where there is believed to be a further untested fluorspar deposit.

Cheetham said the price of fluorspar has hit $350 per tonne and continues to rise on world markets with some consumers facing critical supply shortages as traditional supplies from China are diverted to meet growing Chinese domestic demand.

Fluorspar is the commercial name for the industrial mineral fluorite (calcium fluoride - chemical formula CaF2), which is the main industrial source of fluorine for the manufacture of various chemicals including those used as a flux used in aluminium and steel production as well as in the ceramics industry and in the manufacture of uranium hexafluoride nuclear fuel
