I was involved with the construction of the Sydney to Melbourne gas pipeline, i beleive the gas was coming from Salem heading north, im not sure if the gas was fed from Bass Strait but likely, i was on the earth works crew and drank a great deal of beer at the time, unfortunately i didnt pay more attention to the logistics, at the end of the day NSW could use a very large feed source of its own. At the time there was talk of a large gas line to be constructed from ofshore north queensland to come all the way down the coast, im not sure if it ever eventuated. It looks like gas is coming from north and south of NSW. Building a 55km pipeline from ofshore should a big feild be discovered will be a no brainer. Such a development would create a huge amount of high paying jobs generating benefits for the entire nation, the hairy arm pit brigade have a hard time seeing this from all of that green stuff they have been smoking.
