It appears for now that there will only be two ways for operators to get the rigs they are looking for. The first, and more probable method will be farming-in a slot on a rig.
To date two deepwater rigs in Brazil are using this type of arrangement. Shell has brought in Stena Tay, a 7500ft semi converted from an accommodations unit last year. This is under a five-year contract to Shell with a five-year option. The rig will drill one well for Shell - notable as the first deepwater well (2000m) spud by an international operator - and then be farmed-out to Amerada Hess for three wells.
