A cross trade is no different to a regular trade other than being between two clients of the same broker. Given a broker will provide services to many clients, these can be quite common. If you are a Commsec client and you place an order on market and are matched with another commsec client, it will be filled as a cross trade. Not sure why there's a perception that these are imaginary nothing trades...
