I agree with you very strongly, that it is a horrible, inhumane way to die. But the problem is that we humans go to war, not with which specific weapons or technologies are used. Poison gas, flamethrowers, magnesium incendiary bombs, napalm, and now thermite have all been normalised and deployed at various times.

The terrible thing about war is that it shows how far you can break humans down into inhuman brutes who will commit unspeakable acts against other humans and explain it with "following orders". It's no wonder soldiers who have seen action return to society as shattered relics of their original selves. Training for the armed forces aims to break down the individual and reassemble them as a blindly obedient killing machine. As far as I know, no military devotes anywhere near the same level of exit training to discharged personnel to undo the damage.
